For The Young And Not So Young
But our livable communities aren’t just for Boomers. Much research has shown that there is a symbiotic relationship between younger and older adults. Young people keep their elders engaged and active. Older adults provide wisdom and experience. And mixing the generations keeps older adults from becoming socially isolated and segregated.
There are many examples of successful intergenerational living. Some communities have intentionally placed sitting areas next to playgrounds. Others have quilting groups for people of all ages. In some, older adults even volunteer to provide day care to the youngsters. One New York community has a designated “intergenerational garden” where beds are assigned to and planted by teams of young and old, from 8 to 80. The garden has become so beautiful that it is often used for weddings and other special celebrations. In all these communities, the sharing of experiences intergenerationally has proven to be mutually beneficial.
That’s why our livable communities welcome people of all ages.
